Kapai 67 Turnip Seed Supplies
Seed of Kapai ' 67 turnip is now 1 available from seeds , merchants. Seventeen j thousand pounds of : seed have been dis- , tributed by Wright , Stephenson and Com- 1 pany, Invercargill, and ’ this quantity should , be sufficient for in- i tended sowings this ' year. Kapai 67 turnip is a valu- j able replacement for early i sowings of Green Globe or i York Globe turnips because i of its resistance to cauli- 1 flower mosaic virus. At Crop j Research Division last , year i
York Globe and Green Globe turnips were completely destroyed by virus and bacterial rots by June, but 70 per cent of the bulbs of Kapai 67 were sound at the end of July. When York Globe and Green Globe have not been attacked by virus, Kapai 67 has yielded about as well as them. It is not a suitable replacement for York Globe for late sowings, and also the risk of virus infection in crops sown from mid-February onwards is not very great For sowings from mid-February York Globe is still the preferred variety, but for sowings before then-,''kapai 67 is more likely to give a good crop of sound turnips than any other variety.
