ADDINGTON MARKET Large Entries Of Fat Stock; Values Easier

Fat sheep met a steady sale, but at easier values, at the Addington market yesterday. With an entry approaching 5000 head, it was one of the largest offerings for some months.

Two-tooth wethers were forward in large numbers, and quality was much improved. The market opened on an easier note, but values held up quite well, although competition cased before the end of the sale. With an entry of fewer than 1000 head, fat lambs generally met a firm sale. In the closing stages, light and medium-weights were stronger.

An entry of more than 500 fat cattle exceeded trade requirements and values for all classes of cattle were easier. The market, however, remained fairly satisfactory. Dairy cattle were forward in much fewer numbers, but buyers were very selective, and values were back again on the rates of last sale. Fat Lambs Fat lambs again met a firm sale. The entry was 966, compared with 1490 last sale, and quality was good, with a large proportion of well-grown lambs on offer. The early part of the sale was much on a par with last week’s, but over the final stages, the market -was stronger, with light and medium lambs firming by 30c or so. Values were:— Prime heavy lambs, $5.80 to $6.20. Prime medium, $5.30 to $5.70. Prime light, $4.80 to $5.20. Leading sales of fat lambs included: — H. E. J. Calder (Halkett). 26 at $5.70 to $6.20: C. While values, as expected, opened 30c easier, the market held up quite well. However, the weight of numbers saw a marked easing in the final stages. By the last race, competition had ceased. One buyer took eight or 10 of the remaining pens, the rest of the sheep being bypassed. Ewes met a steady sale for most of the day, but at easier rates. The bulk of the offering sold from $2.60 to $2.80. Considering some freezing companies have thousands of ewes to be killed, it was quite a satisfactory sale. Values were: Best young wethers. ss>4o to $5.80, with odd sales to $6.40. Medium wethers, $5 to $5.30. Best older wethers, to $4.70. Other wethers, $3.75 to $4.10. Quality was good, there being very few pens of unfinished cattle. With the continued warm weather, and the over-supply, values for steers were $2 to $5 back on last sale, and in the later stages of the market, the decline was a little more. Heifers, which were not forward in large numbers were easier by $2 to $4, while cow values ranged from a par with last sale to $3 easier. Dairy Cattle With 13 heifers and four cows, the dairy cattle entry was a small one. In both sections quality was not up to that of last sale. While an averagesized gallery followed the sale, buyers were very selective, and selling was much harder, with frequent passings. Best heifers sold from $94 to $ll6, with one sale at $126, while medium heifers sold from $BO to $9O and others down to

$7O. The cows sold from $74 to $94, with one sale at $ll2. Store Cattle Quality was very indifferent in the entry of 280 store cattle. There were a number of pens of beef-bred cattle on offer, and those in forward condition sold quite well, but harder-condi-tioned lots were more difficult to sell. Of the steer entry there were sales of two-year-olds at $85.50 to $94.50. while there was a sale of cows with calves at foot at $9O a head. Leading sales of store cattle included: Lands and Survey account Cheddar Valley, 7 Aberdeen Angus-Hereford cross two-year-old steers at $94.50, 7 Hereford two-year-old steers at $85.50; H. N. Mclntosh (Ruatapu), 6 yearling Hereford steers at $60.50: C. H. Upham (Hundalee), 6 18month Hereford steers at $7O; E. H. Mansfield (Lake Janet), 14 mated Aberdeen Angus cross cows with calves at foot - at $9O. Vealers At 118 head, the veal entry was smaller than usual, but in keeping with the beef market, it was quite a good sale for vendors. Quality was again a little mixed, but the market was again generally firm, with good quality young cattle selling particularly well. The best of the veal sold from $7O to $BO, with medium from $66 to $65, and smaller from $4B to $54. Calves sold from $45 to $5O for the best, with medium from $36 to $42 and small from $24 to $2B. Bulb Seventeen bulls were offered this week, and top price was $232 for an Aberdeen Angus, while a Friesian realised $215. There were several sales of Friesians and Ayrshire bulls at $lO5 to $l7l. while lighter beasts sold from $6O to $9O. Fat Pigs The fat pig offering was much smaller this week and quality was quite good. Values, however, were on a par with last week's lower values, and even with the smaller number, there was a very restricted demand. Light and medium porkers were again hard to sell, and only the odd pen of top quality pigs met worthwhile competition from the trade. A small number of baconers and values were on a par with late rates. Twenty choppers were penned and prices improved by $4 to $5 a head, mainly because of quality. Values were: Light porkers, $12.40 to $14.70. Medium porkers, $15.40 to $17.40. Heavy porkers, $lB to $19.20. Light and medium baconers, $2O to $22.50. Heavy baconers, to $25.80, with one top pen at $26.20. Choppers, unfinished, $6 to $lO. Finished, $20.50 to $35.75. Store Pigs There was a lighter entry of store pigs, and quality was again quite good. Competition was much stronger this week, with some buyers present from outside districts. Not many weaners were offered and values rose from 60c to $1 a head. Slips and small stores also showed an improvement in value, but the odd pen of big stores remained on a par with last sale. However, towards the end of the sale, as buyers filled their requirements, prices eased. The sow entry was a small one, with almost no Interest, the only quotable sales being two in-pig crossbred sows, due to a Large White boar, at $16.50 to $17.50. Values Were:— Weaners, $3.40 to $4.30. Slips, $5.60 to $6.70. Small and medium stores, $7.20 to $9.50. Large stores, to $l2.
