‘Live’ TV Link From Waitangi
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 14. The New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, which last week broke new ground by televising the defence talks at Wairakei independently from both the Auckland and Wellington channels, will telecast the Waitangi Day proceedings “live” throughout the country this year.
The coverage, on the evening of February 6. will consist of the sunset celebration at Waitangi and part of the sixmonthly Waitangi Trust Board meeting, which will be held there earlier that day.
The National Film Unit will also film the proceedings for screening both within New Zealand and abroad. A frigate. two minesweepers and six launches from the Royal New Zealand Navy will be present. The ceremony will be the first attended by the Gover-nor-General (Sir Arthur Por-
ritt), who has become chairman of the board. Whether the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) will attend has not been decided. The Minister of Lands (Mr Mclntyre) will be present as administrator for the trust. Each year, one Maori and one pakeha are invited to the ceremony as special guests. Those chosen this year are Colonel B. M. Poananga, of Raumati, who has been commanding the Ist Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, in Malaysia, and Mr R. G. Sinclair, of Ashburton, president-elect of the Jaycees.
