ATHLETICS Fine Run By Power

A fine performance by J. Power (Tlmaru) In the halfmile and a throw of 55ft 2jin by H. Ruffell (Christchurch), were features of a highly successful New Year athletic* meeting at Ashburton on Saturday.

Ruffell’s throw would have been a Canterbury record, but it was found that the shot was lib untjer the required weight of 121 b for juniors.

Ruffell had a frustrating day, as in an earlier throw he sent the shot 55ft 10in» but the circle was found to be short of the standard required and was altered for a later throw.

Athletes from all parts of the country attended the meeting, including several from North Island university clubs who are doing concentrated training at Woodend.

The weather was hot and there was a fairly strong easterly wind but the trees in the Domain oval gave some protection. One of the highlights of the meeting was the senior two-mile race, which Power won in a time of Smin 52.65ec. In a lineup which included K. Hamilton (Technical), J. Macdonald (Riccarton), D. Dixey (North Otago), R. Sharp (St Martins), and N. Reid (Olympic), Power applied a burst which took him into the lead.

D. Mackenzie, the former New Zealand 100 and 220 yards title holder and 440 yards champion won the A grade 100 yd event with a time of 10.4 sec with K. Simpson (Toe H) and A. Tweedie (High School) keeping him very close company. R. Jones (Toe H) ran well to take the junior 100 and 220 yard events in impressive style.

Technical’s Miss P. Poulson did well to win the 75 and 100 yards events, beating fellow clubmate, Miss L. Burrell, each time, and she came second in the senior shot put and high jump. The New Zealand representative at the Commonwealth Games at Jamaica, Miss D. Charters, won the shot put and came second with the javelin. The 17-year-old Christchurch girl, Miss S. Flynn, won the javelin event with a throw of 102 ft sin.

The 50 kilometre walk, which was held for the first time as a Canterbury title, was won by G. McCall (University) with a time of shr 38min 13sec. He was followed 28 minutes later by J. Hinton (Christchurch) and a long way back by D. Spence (Toe H).

R. Hood, of Ashburton, won the six-mile road race for the third time in succession and was. awarded the Barry Lewis Trophy by Lewis himself. Lewis was formerly of Ashburton but now lives in Greymouth. Abbreviations used in the list of results are,—Ashburton, Ar;
