Good Showing By Young Swimmers
Canterbury’s younger swimmers had a satisfactory dress rehearsal for the centre championships at an age group carnival in the Papanui pool on Saturday.
The carnival marked the resumption of competitive swimming in Christchurch after the fourweek holiday break, but the times of the young swimmers indicated that there had been no slackening of effort in training during this period.
The Lewis brothers, Mark and Brent, were in fine fettle and both gained four wins. Michael Lee (Wharenui) and Jocelyn Hay (Elmwood) won three races each, as did Maureen McManus (Christchurch) in the under-10 section. Others who showed ability In several strokes included Richard Faulding (Elmwood), Mark Harding (Wharenui), Susan and Phillipa Truscott (Elmwood), Jannette Kear (Beckenham), and Kathleen McManus (Christchurch). In spite of facing two handicaps, Tui Shipston producedl a splendid performance ini finishing third in a combined. 200 yards breaststroke race. I Her first handicap was considerable: she agreed to start a length behind her rivals. Then she had the misfortune to swallow a mouthful of
water, but pluckily she kepi going. She made up about 10 yards on the winner, Peter Sexton (North Beach). Abbreviations used in the results are:— J.P., Jellie Park: S., Spreydon: W., Wharenui: 8., Beckenham: C., Christchurch: N. 8., New Brighton: Nth. 8., North Beach: E., Elmwood; St A., St Albans.
