SWISS DO WELL
Resignation at the evident superiority of J. C. Killy (France) over the rest of the world’s skiers was proved unwarranted after the recent SUbertannen meeting in West Germany. Killy finished second in the first of two giant slalom races, and fourth in the second. Both were won by E. Bruggmann (Switzerland) who finished with a combined time two seconds faster than that of Killy. Bruggmann is ranked only twenty-fourth in the world, and was not the only dark horse to do well. R. Lindstroem (Sweden) finished fifth in the first race after starting thirty-eighth in the
line-up, and arriving too late to have a look at the course. D. Giovauoli (Switzerland) showed excellent form to finish sixth and second in the two races, while W. Kidd (U.S.A.), who broke a leg just before the world championship at Portillo, finished third ahead of Killy in the second race. The meeting was a triumph for the Swiss skiers who finished first (Bruggmann), third (Giovanoli) and sixth (K. Hugler) in the combined. Killy was the only Frenchman to make much impression, while K. Schranz (Austria) skied con- ■ sistently to finish fifth in the i combined.
