EARLY CROP OF WHEAT

One of the first crops of wheat for this season was harvested at Kaituna on Wednesday, and carted to an Addington flourmill on Thursday. Consigned from the property of Mr L. G. Cooper, of Kaituna Valley, the wheat was mainly Hilgendorf, with a smaller quantity of Aotea. Mr M. J. McNally, managing director of H. Worrall, Ltd, flourmiller, said it was a very good sample. The Hilgendorf had a baking score of 38 (out of a possible 50), and the Aotea 37. The wheat was also a well harvested sample, Mr McNally estimating that it would test out at less than 1 per cent for screenings. Mr McNally said It was in farmers’ own interests to make a good job of heading their wheat crops. He predicted that millers would be more particular in their purchasing this season, and would tend to avoid samples with excess screenings.
