Castle Dee For Avondale Race

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. Castle Dee’s excellent efforts against the best northern stayers at the Auckland summer meeting and his latest training gallops at Takanini indicate that he will be very hard to beat in the John Wells Handicap at Avondale today. Castle Dee was second in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap and fourth in the Auckland Cup at Ellerslie. This week he has been most impressive in his fast work. Castle Dee may not be the favourite today because about half a dozen runners have excellent recent form. Tatua, the top-weight with 9-7, will have a big following. Dee Dee, Udare and Second Sight are also worthy of respect. Success for Dee Dee would bring a welcome change of luck for the Cambridge trainer, W. W. Townsend. At the beginning of the season Townsend had a formidable team of open-class stayers. But in the last three months, through injuries, he has lost Court Rapid, Mr Fagan, Utah and Creolian. Dee Dee also suffered a setback in December but she showed she had recovered by finishing fifth in the Nathans Memorial Handicap on the fourth day at Ellerslie at her first start "after a short rest. The Takanini gallopers, Valiant Rebel, Bywon, and Springlo, and Classical Glow, from Matamata, may be prominent in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Flying Handicap. The weather has been fine and the track should be fast.
