END OF PEACE MARCH

Bronzed and foot-weary, 47 peace marchers of the Progressive Youth Movement ended their walk from Auckland to Wellington at Parliament Buildings late yesterday afternoon. They carried peace and antiVietnam war banners, and marched to the main steps, where they were met by members of the Wellington Committee on Vietnam and supporters. In all, about 120 gathered to listen to short speeches delivered by the group’s leaders and the chairman of the committee on Vietnam (Mr D. Carrad). The photograph, taken on the steps of Parliament Buildings, shows the marchers and others being addressed by Mr Carrad (extreme right). On the left is Inspector P. R. Mairs. An Interested spectator was the Minister of Police (Mr Allen), who watched the assembly from a door at the side of the main steps. Mr Allen said the group had not attempted to present any letter, nor had it asked to see a member of the Government. About two dozen police were stationed at strategic points around and inside Parliament Buildings, but the demonstration was peaceful and orderly. Some 30 minutes after their arrival the peace marchers left the grounds.— (PA.)
