Leap From Launch

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 11. A Hamilton man jumped from his 34ft launch when its engine caught fire off Waiheke Island yesterday. Mr S. B. Pauling, aged 29, was at the stem of his launch, the Waikaremoana, when the engine burst into flames. Unable to radio for help because of the flames, he jumped into the water and was picked up by a local boat. The launch was soon blazing and sank in an hour.

Satellite Re-entry.—Wresat, Australia’s first satellite, reentered the earth’s atmosphere and burnt up last night, the Minister for Supply, Senator Denham Henty, said today. Re-entry occurred over the Atlantic west of Ireland, he said, and it was believed that the satellite disintegrated and no parts reached the surface of the earth.—Canberra, January 11.
