Melanesian Archdeacon To Visit Christchurch

The Archdeacon of the British Solomon Islands (the Ven. H. V. C. Reynolds) will visit Christchurch from February 7 to February 14, during a four-month tour of New Zealand.

Archdeacon Reynolds, who is also Vicar-General of the Solomon Islands, arrived in New Zealand in November and has been visiting friends throughout New Zealand privately. His visit to Christchurch, however, will be an official deputation on behalf of the New Zealand Anglican Board of Missions.

He will arrive in Christchurch from Timaru on Wednesday, February 7, and his first engagement will be at 7.45 p.m. on Thursday, when he will address the Friends of Melanesia in the chapter room of Christchurch Cathedral. On Friday morning he will visit the day school at St Mark's, Opawa. and in the afternoon he will visit Christ’s College. In the evening he will speak to members of the Linwood parish coffee club. On Saturday he will make a private visit to Menzies Bay. Banks Peninsula.

Archdeacon Reynolds will preach at four services on Sunday, at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 7 p.m. These will be held at St Michael’s Oxford Terrace, St Mary’s, Addington, Christchurch Cathedral, and St Peter’s, Upper Riccarton, respectively. On Monday he will spend the morning at St Margaret’s College, and on Tuesday morning he will visit St Michael’s day school. On Tuesday afternoon he will address the Melanesian Committee at Church House, and in the evening he will meet members of St Mark’s Church, Opawa. He will lunch with the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt) and Archdeacons of the Diocese of Christchurch on Wednesday. Archdeacon Reynolds, who is a New Zealander, served in St Mark’s Church, Wellington, and St James’s Church, Lower Hutt, before going to the Diocese of Melanesia in 1935. His first appointment in Melanesia was in the New Hebrides, where he remained until he was appointed to the Solomon Islands.
