Electric Cars

Sir, —It augurs well for the prospects of electric vehicles that the Mercedes Benz development engineer should disparage the prospects of electric passenger cars. It is not generally known that already there are more than 100,000 modern industrial battery electric vehicles in commercial use in Britain. They are operated wherever the frequency of stops is greater than 2 or 3 a mile and are very much cheaper indeed to operate over a 20-year term than petrol equivalents. Their sole major cost is replacement batteries and their performance for stop/starts is extremely good. The passenger electric car (£UK3OO) or scooter (£UK9O) with leadacid battery is already practical for use as a second vehicle which never exceeds 40 miles a day. There is every reason for established companies to fear the effect that any major improvements to batteries might have on sales of conventional cars.—Yours, etc., D. W. KING. Rangiora, January 12, 1968.
