Research In Gilberts

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 28. I An Auckland geographer, Mr R. D. Bedford, is in the 'Gilbert and Ellice Islands for 10 weeks to do research for the South Pacific Commission. This year he was the first first-class honours graduate in geography at Auckland University for 10 years and did his thesis on the Gilbert and Ellice group. He will do research into, the population and employment potential of the main urban centre, Tarawa. The colony Government is concerned over the disappearance of phosphate deposits, and wants to know if Tarawa can be developed to provide work for the part of the population which would normally be employed in the phosphate works.
