WEAR INDICATORS
SPREAD wear indicators are now appearing on more car tyres, the Rubber Manufacturers’ Association reports. The new safety feature was developed by tyre manufacturers as a means of enabling drivers to tell when tread depth was down to the danger point of one-sixteenth of an inch. The indicator is moulded into the tread at six or eight points around the circumference of the tyre, so that a smooth bar effect appears across the face of the tread when it has worn to the minimum safety level. Tyres should be rejected as unsafe for several reasons.

When the tread has worn to less than one-sixteenth of an inch or where any part of the ply or cord is exposed or when there are tread or sidewall cracks or cuts deep enough to expose the cords the tyre should be discarded. When bumps or bulges indicate possible separation of tread or sidewall from the tyre body the tyre should be removed from the wheel and examined by an expert. Tyre valves should be in good condition and fitted with valve caps, bent or cracked rims should be replaced, and missing wheelnuts should also be replaced.
