Double To Three-year-olds

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Nlpawln showed up Ben Lomond’s class and the mediocrity of the handicap horses when he ran away with the Summer Cup at Ellerslie yesterday. Ben Lomond seemed stones better than Nipawin in the derby. Nipawin in turn made his opponents yesterday look very ordinary indeed. While he is not as good as Ben Lomond, and those he beat yesterday were mainly moderates, Nipawin must be rated a very fair stayer. With only five furlongs to go, Nipawin was giving each of his 15 opponents a start. He was well back on the home turn and nowhere near the leaders until into the last furlong. From there he put in a great run which took him to the front in plenty of time for an easy win. Nipawin was the second winner of the afternoon for Sir William Stevenson and the Takanini trainer, I. J. Tucker, who were successful also with Mitamit.

Both Mitamit and Nipawin are by Pharamond, the Ra Ora sire which was sold early this year to Japan.

While Nipawin is to be nominated against Ben Lomond and the other three-year-olds at the Wellington summer meeting next month it Is more likely he will be kept for further handicap races in his home district.

Tipperary Tom, a hot win and place favourite and the most popular runner by a long way with doubles betters, was caught and beaten in the last few yards of the second leg, the Electric Handicap. It was bad luck for his backers that Tipperary Tom had to run wide, otherwise he would have won. As it was he reached the front past Lord Ted and Count Two with a furlong to go. Prince Petary made a run in the centre and snatched his win just short of the post. The T.A.B. double, Nipawin and Prince Petary, paid $89.70.
