Davis Cup Retained

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BRISBANE The Spanish champion, M Santana, saved Spain from a “white-wash” in the Davis Cup challenge round yesterday when he beat the Wimbledon title-holder, J. D. Newcombe. To the cheers of “Manolo, Manolo,” from the few Spanish spectators, Santana won 7-5, 6-4, 6-2. Australia won the tie 4-1 but only after a magnificent fight by the 18-year-old Spanish player, H. Orantes, against R. A. Emerson in the final singles. Orantes won only two games in the first two sets but then fought back to take the third, 6-2, and to lead 4-1 in the fourth. Emerson finally won the match 6-1, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Australia had won the first two singles on Tuesday and the doubles on Wednesday.
