Howarth Bowls Auckland To Lead Against Otago

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. Auckland was in a strong position yesterday at the end of the first day of its Plunket Shield cricket match with Otago. No fewer than 21 wickets fell and 249 runs were scored in the day’s play.

Auckland batted on a placid pitch, and was dismissed for 144. The visitors then routed Otago for 92 after the home side had gone to tea with 27 runs on the board without loss.

Left with 20 minutes before stumps, Auckland lost the wicket of T. W. Jarvis and ended the day with 13 runs on the board, 65 ahead of Otago’s first innings. The Auckland slow left-arm bowler, H. J. Howarth took six wickets for 23 runs from 16.3 overs. Auckland’s first innings lasted only 230 minutes. The side was struggling for runs from the time that Webster took the wickets of J. T. Sparling and R. W. Morgan in his second over, with only seven runs on the board. Matatumua then took the wickets of Jarvis and J. D Behrent, and Auckland was four down for 25. Hard Hitting G. E. Vivian showed the first signs of agression with successive fours off Matatumua. Vivian finally was out leg before to Matatumua when trying to sweep to the boundary. He had scored a refreshing 27 which included five fours. J. G. Kemp lost another partner when R. Dykes was also leg before to K. O. Campbell without scoring, and then Kemp was caught behind off the bowling of Webster. Kemp made 41 and he had done much towards preventing Auckland from collapsing completely. The side went to lunch seven down for 99 but sound batting by Howarth and R S. Cunis added 47 runs before the next three wickets fell. In 50 minutes before tea, Otago scored 27 without loss and was seemingly in no trouble. W. L. Blair was on 20

and was beginning to attack the bowling just before the adjournment. Quick Collapse Then he and his opening partner, R. W. Hutchison, had a mix-up in the middle of the pitch when the score was 33 and Hutchison was run out. Blair followed soon after. Only J. C. Alabaster, last man out with a score of 23, showed the courage to treat the bowling strictly on its merits. Scores:— AUCKLAND First Innings T. W. Jarvis c and b Mata- j tumua 15 J. T.
