Wellington, Otago Gain First Innings Points

Otago almost gained an outright win over Auckland and Wellington took first innings points from Canterbury in the firstround matches of the Brabin Cup (under-20) cricket tournament at Hagley Oval yesterday.

Otago and Wellington lead with five points each and they will meet in the second round today.

Canterbury and Auckland, each with one point, will play in the other match. Successive Sixes

Wellington, 118 for three wickets in its first innings when play resumed, was soon in trouble, losing four more wickets for 30. However, the tall left-hander, W. A. Greenstreet, made 57 not out in very good style to take Wellington past Canterbury’s innings total of 171. He hit three sixes, two off successive balls from P. G. D’Auvergne, and four fours. Wellington declared at lunch, with 225 for nine.

C. deß. Galwey was largely responsible for the Canterbury breakthrough. He kept the ball up to the batsmen and was able to make the occasional ball lift with the second new ball. Canterbury batted attractively in its second innings, making 189 for four declared. J. D. Riley hit the ball hard in his 64 and I. M. Walter was his usual solid self in making 62. This left Wellington about 50 minutes to score 137 for qutright victory but it was never a proposition. Galwey’s first over began sensationally when he bowled I. H. Taylor but the incoming batsman, P. J. Wilson, proceeded to drive him for a four and a six off successive balls.

Auckland, avoiding the fol-low-on by three runs, was later set to score 249 in 150 minutes to win outright, after Otago had declared its second Innings at 151 for nine.

Auckland lost wickets : quickly and the Otago bowlers I began to get on top. Auckland was 58 for six wickets ' but a stubborn partnership ' between R. Arblaster (36, not out) and R. Sunderland 1 thwarted Otago’s efforts. Scores: — WELLINGTON • First Innings (118/3) j. H. Blackmore c Jackson b Galway .65 B. R. Niven c and b D'Auvergne . 41 D. W. Priest lbw b Galway 9 P. J.
