BUTTER TALKS
Comments Explained (N.z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 28. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) had discussions in Australia last week on the possibility of New Zealand taking up any unfilled portion of Australia’s quota on the British market, but not on the possible entry of New Zealand butter on to the Australian market. A member of the Prime Minister’s staff today made clear that Mr Holyoake’s comments at a press conference last Saturday, on his return from Australia, did not refer to New Zealand trying to sell butter on the Australian domestic market.
On his return, Mr Holyoake referred to his discussions with Mr McEwen and Mr Wilson, the Australian and British Prime Ministers. He said the talks had involved “an interesting development in the possible sale of New Zealand butter. It does not affect large quantities, but a worth-while quantity.”
The Press Association report wrongly associated this comment with the possible sale of Nev Zealand butter to Australia.
In fact, Mr Holyoake was referring to the possibility that New Zealand might be able to take up some of Australia’s quota on the British market.
