FOUR HURT
Lifeboat Falls From Davits
Four of the Japanese crew of the Wellington Maru, berthed at Lyttelton, were injured when a lifeboat fell 40ft with them in it into the water on Saturday morning. Masaru Kinoshita and Sauchi Kanda suffered serious back injuries, Shigeru Yamazki suffered fairly serious arm and back injuries, and Teruto Sato suffered fairly serious back injuries. All four were admitted to the Christchurch Hospital. Mr Kanda’s condition last night was fairly satisfactory, and ♦hat of the others was satisfactory. The lifeboat had been swung out from the ship’s side to allow it to be lowered so that the side of the ship could be painted, but was accidentally released. It was split from bow to stern as it hit the water.
The Wellington Mani, berth at wharf 7 east. Is discharging heavy cargo from Japan. She arrived from Lae on Friday. The vessel is commanded by Captain Y. Takenaka. \
She is to remain at Lyttelton to complete the discharge, of Lyttelton cargo before sailing to Wellington. Four men being flown from Japan to replace the injured men will join her there.
