Ben Lomond Guineas Fancy

“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Ben Lomond retains favouritism for the Great Northern Derby at Ellerslie today. Since he galloped well on the course a week ago few betters have considered the possibility of defeat. Most of his opponents seem hardly in his class. If Ben Lomond is successful he will have won four races in succession and because two of the others were the Avondale Guineas and the Waikato Guineas he will be entitled to be ranked the best three-year-old. During the week-end only the training mile by Marygrad at Takanini suggested that Ben Lomond may be extended. Another of his opponents, Proud Chief, won over 10 furlongs at Te Awamutu but not sufficiently well to seem a threat. Ben Lomond did not come out of the Waikato Guineas too well against Proud Chief but his form otherwise has been miles better than that of the Takanini colt. His showing at Te Rapa was probably attributable to his dislike of the very heavy footing. The first leg of the T.A.B. double, the Queen Elizabeth Handicap, should be an excellent Auckland Cup Trial. Bardowie, Terrific, El Tombo, Sunset Fair, Janeville, Golden Defoe and Honestly are among the acceptors. There was fine sunny weather yesterday. The track, after the light rain of the week-end, should provide excellent footing.
