Seven Road Deaths Over Christmas

Five persons had died by late last night from road accidents over the Christmas holiday period, the Press Association reported. Two children injured in accidents last week, one a Christchurch boy, also died during the holiday period.

The road toll for the same period of the Christmas holidays last year was three.

So far this year 556 persons have died as the result of road accidents.

Driving had generally been good, though a minority of irresponsible road users had caused concern to traffic officers with excessive speeds, failing to keep left and a

variety of other offences, the Assistant Commissioner of Transport (Mr B. C. Campbell) said last night.

Murray Bruce McFedries, aged 22, a mechanic employed by the Utah Mining and Construction Company at Manapouri, who was visiting his parents at Blenheim.

A three-month-old boy was killed in a truck crash on a secondary road near Greytown about 9 a.m. on Saturday. He was Shaun Piii Hemi, son of Mr and Mrs J. Hemi. Mrs Hemi and an older son, 19-month-old Ralph, were injured when the truck she was driving went into a drain. They are in a satisfactory condition in Masterton Hospital. Police searched for an hour before Shaun’s body was found in the drain about 25 yards from the truck. Girl Fatally Hurt A seven-year-old girl died in the Wanganui Hospital on Saturday as the result of being injured in an accident on Heads Road on Thursday night. She was Lynette Eileen Clune, daughter of Mr and Mrs B. Clune, of 368 Heads Road, Wanganui; Albany Collision A young man died when his car was involved in a head-on collision at Albany on Friday.
