Governor Frost Picked

"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND.

Governor Frost’s bid in the Christmas Free-for-all to qualify for the Auckland Trotting Cup next Saturday will be a highlight of the opening night of the Auckland Trotting Clubs meeting at Alexandra Park tonight. There is no doubt he will be ■ pronounced favourite from several others also on the fringe of cup class. Governor Frost has made splendid progress in training at Pukekohe since he outclassed a strong field in the Thames Trotting Cup last week. He has an outstanding record in a brief career and many keen trotting men are wondering just how good he is. The main threat to him in the Christmas Free-for-all may be Amend. Mister Chips, and Loyal Knight. Amend has raced kindly for his new trainer-driver, G. L. Mitchell, and with a mobile start to help him, he could be hard to beat. A grand stayer. Amend showed fine form at last year's cup meeting. He won twice over two miles, both tunes from a mobile start. Mister Chips, a close third to Great Adios and James in fast time at barrier trials on Tuesday, indicated he was back to his best. He has drawn well and has the early speed to maintain a handy position. Wide interest is being taken in the National Flying Pace, the first flying mile to be staged by the Auckland club. If the track is fast, which is probable. Lordship's New Zealand race record of Im in 58 2-ssec could be in danger. Great Adios and Miles Gentry, the principals in the thrilling finish to the Hosking Free-for-all at Alexandra Park a few weeks ago are sure to be the best backed, but the chances of Snry, Oakhampton, and Chequer Board are by no means remote. The track should be fast. Selections: 5.55 p.m.—Freyberg Handicap; Charlie's Task, Regal i Hal. Cheeky. 4.25 p.m.—Tamakl Handicap: eastern Star, General's Choice.
