Tie In Representative Bowls

Canterbury retained the Lindley-Neill Cup for competition between Canterbury and West Coast bowling teams when both the matches arid total points scored were equal after 16 matches on the Beckenham green on Saturday.

After the last game the matches were tied at eightall and the position was not disturbed when the points were added —they came to 293 for both teams. West Coast led by five games to three after the morning’s play. So Canterbury retained the trophy, but nobody really cared.

The day’s drama was during the latter stages of the last game between C. Higson’s West Coast four and V. V. Gallagher’s Canterbury team. Gallagher had to win the game to square the score and give Canterbury a chance of a win on the count-back. On the final end, Gallagher was leading 17-15, which would have been a sufficient margin to give him the game, but he needed to win by three to square the points total, and by four if Canterbury were to win on the countback.

Higson held the shot on the final end, but he drove in an attempt to clear a close Canterbury bowl. However, the drive knocked out the bowl which held the shot, and Gallagher was one up. Higson drove again with his next bowl, and missed. He lost the head by one and Gallagher had taken the game 18-15—a sufficient margin to square the points.

S. G. Havill (West Coast) took part in two fine games when he beat S. G. Buxton tn the morning and J. Langley in the afternoon. Against Buxton, he was leading 17-4 on the tenth end, but Buxton fought back to within four points and eventually lost, 20-22. After the eighth end against Langley, Hivlll was once more leading handily, 13-2. Langley came back over the next few heads to be down 14-10. Havlll led 21-14 on the eighteenth, but Langley got a six on the twentieth to come within a point. Havill’s one on the last end gave him a win. 22-20. Results (West Coast names erst) were:— ■
