CRICKET IN HURUNUI
Both leading teams slumped to defeat, in the round of the Hurunui cricket competitions on Saturday, and as a result Cheviot has now taken the lead, and with it the Denia Challenge Cup—an automatic challenge each week, for the team drawn to play the holder.
However, Cheviot has yet to take the bye and Culverden and United Waikari. second and third place, meet in the final round next Saturday.
Both Saturday’s games resulted in first innings decisions, Cheviot beating Cluverden and Scargill accounting for United Waikari. United Hawarden had the bye. Points: Cheviot 54, Culverden 52, United Waikari 50. Scargill 40, United Hawarden 34.

Culv.rd.n Cheviot won the toss and batted on Its own pitch, declaring with eight down for 169. F. Fowler top scored with an aggressive 41. which Included nine fours, while D. Wyllie made a good 29. Four other Cheviot batsmen also reached double figures. S. Hunt with three wickets, and J. Hamilton and P. Kininmonth with two wickets each, were the most auccessful bowlers, but were unable to break through the Cheviot latter order batsmen.
Culverden did not look like overhauling the Cheviot total, and only the tenth wicket partnership of 30 between T. Barber and W. Blackwell saw Culverden reach 132. Klnlnmonth was the mainstay of the Innings with a good 52. and Hunt batted Impressively for his 18. Wyllie bowled very well for Cheviot, and thoroughly deserved his six wickets. Fowler and B. Jones shared the other four.

Gardner 3/23) on the first innings.
