VICE-REGAL VISIT
The Governor-General (Sir Arthur Porritt), accompanied by Lady Porritt and Miss Joanna Porritt. will visit Christchurch today. Their Excellencies will arrive aboard a DC3 at the Royal New Zealand Air Force base at Wigram at 11.15 a.m. They will be met by the commander of the Training Group (Air Commodore A. S. Agar) and a 100man guard of honour, commanded by Flight Lieutenant G. W. Ragg. After the ceremonial welcome, expected to take about 15 minutes, their Excellencies will drive to the Clarendon Hotel by way of Blenheim road. Deans Avenue, Harper Avenue, Park Terrace, Rolleston Avenue and Worcester Street The Mayor (Sir George Manning) and Lady Manning will call on the ViceRegal family at 2.15 p.m. They will be accompanied by ‘he Town Clerk
(Mr M. B. Hayes) and Mrs Hayes. This afternoon their Excellencies will go on a scenic tour with Sir George Manning and Lady Manning. After visiting the Botanic Gardens the party will drive along Riccarton Avenue, Bagley Avenue, Lincoln Road, Lyttelton Street, Rose Street, Boon Hay Road, Cashmere Road, and Hackthorne Road to the Summit Road, where a stop will be made at the look-out point near the television tower. The party will return to Christchurch by Dyers Pass Road, Colombo Street, Moorhouse Avenue, Manchester Street, and Oxford Terrace. The scenic tour is expected to last about 75 minutes.
After returning to their hotel the Vice-Regal party will receive several private visitors, among them Miss M. R. Porritt, a first cousin of the Gov-
ernor-General. Later Sir Arthur Porritt will meet honorary aides-de-camp. Their Excellencies will dine privately. In the evening a civic reception will be held in the Civic Theatre. It is customary for speakers on civic occasions to represent local and central government, but because of the Governor-General’s interest in athletics and medicine the speakers who will follow the Mayor on this occasion will be Mr N. F. Greensiade, president of the Medical Association of New Zealand, and Mr A. I. Cottrell, chairman of Commonwealth Games Promotion.
Songs will be sung by 25 choristers of Christchurch Cathedral.
The Vice-Regal party will leave for Wigram at 9.15 a.m. tomorrow by way of Oxford Terrace, Riccarton Avenue, Deans Avenue, and Blenheim Road to fly to Dunedin.
