MALVERN P. Blakely, Hororata’s med-ium-fast bowler, returned the outstanding figures of nine for 63 against Sheffield on Saturday. However, scoring only 85 runs, Hororata lost by 83 runs. Five years ago, Blakely took all 10 wickets against South Malvern. The other feature of the day’s play was the 97 scored in 85 minutes by A. Wall (Kirwee) against South Malvern. With G. T. Wright, he added 158 for the second wicket and paved the way for Kirwee’s easy win. R. Pettet, scoring 68 for Darfleld Juniors, took his season’s aggregate to 374 and his average to 75. Bonus points were won by Kirwee, Sheffield and Darfield.

Wright 3/29). Darfield 167/6 dec. (R. Farrant 70, R. Bowman 35; T. Wall 2/36, D. Crombie 2/27, M. Pettet 1/47) drew with Darfield Juniors 152/7 (R. Pettet 68, R. Gunn 37; M. Frew 3/64, Bowman 2/30). PENINSULA Three centuries, by P. Johnson (Le Bons Bay), T. Haley (Akaroa), and R. Kay (United), were scored in the Banks Peninsula competition. Rain affected the matches, and the match between Le Bons Bay and ’Kaituna resulted in a draw when 319 runs were scored for the loss of only four wickets. Scores were:—
Little River 108/4 (D. Mason 32, L. Morrison 33) beat Diamond Harbour 100 (L. Morrison 3/19).
Akaroa 261 (T. Haley 114, Peter Haglund 4/91. G. Marshall 4/48) drew with United 190/4 (Peter Haglund 67, R. Kay 112 not out).
Le Bons 230/3 declared (L. Inwood 71 not out, P. Johnson 113 not out) drew with Kaituna 89/0 (M. Dunkear 29 not out, R. Newton 54 not out). Points:—Le Bons 46, Kaituna 44, Little River 40, Diamond Harbour 37, Akaroa 32, United 22. Wainui 19. ELLESMERE Rain curtailed play in the Ellesmere competition on Saturday. Batsmen were generally dominant, with W. Scott’s 91 not out the best individual performance.
Scores: Weedons 169 (C. Tilson 62. M. Manion 41. E. Chatterton 22; J. Lay 4/45, S. Fox 4/27); Irwell 86/1 (D. Mcßae 66 not out). Lincoln 220 (W. Scott 91 not out, R. Kerr 32; G. Mcllwraith 3/52, M. Moorhead 4/43, P. Ballinger 3/36) v. Southbridge. Leeston 198/8 declared (M. Chamberlain 38, K. Boal 36, L. McJarrow 30, P. Chamberlain 32; D. Scott 3/17), Dunsande! 34/1. HURUNUI Both leading teams were beaten in ninth round matches of the Hurunui competition, and as a result Cheviot has now taken the lead, and with it the Denia Challenge Cup—an automatic challenge each week, for the team drawn to play the holder.
However, Cheviot has yet to have the bye, and Culverden and United Waikari, second and third placed, meet in the final round next Saturday. Both matches on Saturday resulted in first innings decisions, Cheviot beating Culverden and Scargill defeating United Waikari. United Hawarden had the bye. Points: Cheviot 54, Culverden 52, United Waikari 50, Scargill 40, United Hawarden 34.
ASHLEY An interesting change on the points table marked the end of fifth round matches in the Ashley competition. The steadilyimproving Fernside team takes second place, after beating Ohoka. The leader, Woodend, took first innings points from
Kaiapol, which is now tn third place. Rangiora lost on the first innings to Oxford, and remains in fourth place. Results: Woodend 235 beat Kaiapol 107 and 81/4, on the first innings. Fernside 261 beat Ohoka 89 and 151, outright. Rangiora 171 and 118/3 declared lost on the first innings to Oxford 181 and 70/4.
Points: Woodend 32, Fernside 24, Kaiapol 21. Rangiora 17, Oxford 13, Ohoka 3.
