The wider use of New Zealand indigenous materials is to be investigated by a committee set up by the Auckland branch of the Institution of Engineers. The council of the institution is convinced that engineers can make a greater contribution toward a favourable balance of overseas fund*.

Engineers influence or control a large proportion of spending on works of all kinds, says the council. They have the opportunity to save overseas funds by making wider use of local materials or methods, or materials with a low imported content
