Sunday Permit For Hotel Refused
An application by the licensee of the Culverden Hotel (Mr W. T. Waltho) for an extended-hours permit for tomorrow has been refused by’a Christchurch magistrate. However, Mr Waltho has been granted a permit to stay open until midnight tonight.
A golf tournament for lowhandicapped golfers has been organised for tomorrow, and Mr Waltho sought a permit from 3.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. to enable a buffet luncheon to be served and presentations made.
Applications for extended hours on a Sunday were uncommon, but he could see no reason why they should not be granted, said Mr Waltho yesterday. He believed the Recreation Hotel, Greymouth, had obtained permits twice.
As the tournament would start at 10 a.m. tomorrow and would not finish until midafternoon, many competitors would miss a meal, said Mr Waltho.
Competitors were members of clubs from throughout Canterbury, the West Coast, and parts of Marlborough, and be-
cause his application for a Sunday permit had been declined, some would not now be coming.
