No-one For Soup
(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, Dec. 8. Not a single 1 unemployed person went to the Salvation Army’s soup kitchen which opened in the Nelson Citadel at noon today. The commanding officer (Major B. I. Williams) said she was not disappointed by the lack of response and still felt the need for such a kitchen existed. Many of the unemployed might not yet
know of the service, she said.
About six gallons of soup prepared for the lunch-hour opening today was later given to needy families. The Salvation Army will offer chits entitling people who are unemployed to a meal at a restaurant or in a private home during the weekend.
The soup kitchen position will be reviewed on Monday.
