Chance For Surfing

*The Frew” Special Service

AUCKLAND. As a country girl, bom and bred, and an enthusiastic horsewoman, Miss Rowena Brassey, lady-in-wait-ing to Lady Porritt, is looking forward to life in a country which enjoys plenty of outdoor activities.

An enthusiastic sports-

woman, Miss Brassey is already planning to buy a surf board and try her hand at riding the breakers. “I enjoy swimming, but I've never done any surfing before,” she said. “I think it looks a most exciting sport.” Another sporting activity which Miss Brassey realises she will now have to watch, and take an interest in, is Rugby. “I’ve never really followed

it before,” she said. “But now that I’m in New Zealand I really must.” Horse riding is a favourite activity which Miss Brassey enjoys when she is at home in Huntingdonshire. “Unfortunately the rural scene is making way for towns and houses now so it means that there is less room for hunting,” she said. “I would like to have a chance to ride while I am here.” Although her family home is in Huntingdonshire, a semirural part of East England, Miss Brassey has been living and working in London for several years as a librarian at the Red Cross headquarters. “It was a fascinating job,” she said. “I thoroughly enjoyed travelling around to all the hospitals and taking books to the patients.” However, Miss Brassey’s new job has outweighed any sense of regret at leaving the Red Cross position and she is delighted to be in New Zealand. “I have known Sir Arthur and Lady Porritt for as long as I can remember,” said Miss Brassey, “so I was thrilled when they asked me to come to New Zealand with them.”

Miss Brassey, who was wearing an off-white linen suit trimmed with chocolate brown braiding and an off-the-face chocolate brown beret style hat for her arrival in Auckland, is also an enthusiastic dressmaker.

"I make mostly long dresses for evening wear,” she said.
