Unloading Autoclave
A 30-ton autoclave 85ft long and 6ft in diameter will be unloaded from a barge at Lyttelton on Monday and brought through the road tunnel to Christchurch. The autoclave will be used for the curing of cement products at the Mandeville Street factory of Fletcher Ltd. The curing is done under steam pressure of up to 2501 b per square in. The 175 ft barge Pohanui, which has visited Lyttelton before, is being towed from Auckland by the tug Mohala, The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s floating crane Rapaki will lift the autoclave on to a heavy road-hauler owned by T. P. Gilroy and Company. When it reaches Mandeville Street the autoclave will be lifted on to its foundations at the factory by a mobile crane. The autoclave will cost about $lO,OOO when installed, and will replace two smaller 40ft units at present in use. The old units will probably be scrapped.
