AVIEMORE PROJECT
No Cut In Hours
The workers on the Aviemore hydro-electric station project yesterday decided by secret ballot to continue working a 48-hour week. There was a majority vote against reducing the hours worked to 44 hours, to spin the job out over a longer period.
The results of the ballot were given by the general secretary of the New Zealand Workers' Union (Mr W. A Dempster) in Christchurch yesterday. This means that the proposed commissioning date of the first generators at the Aviemore power station, June 1968, is likely to be met Mr Dempster said yesterday that the 1100 work force had voted against a recommendation from the Benmore branch of the union. The recommendation was made on the basis that a 44hour week would probably assure the workers of a longer term of employment on the present projects.
