Hawthorne Changes To Rugby League

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY.

Australia’s brilliant Rugby five-eighths, P. Hawthorne, yesterday changed to Rugby League for a record fee.

Hawthorne will play for the leading Sydney club, St George. Its officials refused to reveal the terms of the contract, but it is believed to be worth between 30,000 and 40,000 dollars over four years.

Hawthorne first played for Australia when he toured New Zealand with J. Thomett’s Wallabies in 1962. He played in the three tests of that tour although only 18 years of age.

He has figured in every Australian test team since, with the exception of the match against Scotland on the last Wallaby tour of Britain, when he had to withdraw because of a facial injury.
