Hansen’s Reserve

Sir, —For many years this Opawa reserve has been used by local children flying kites and fishing in the Heathcote River, cross-country runners, and other young persons. Recently access to this area and the river was closed off by a hog barb fence, stables built, and a private entrance made to a local electrical factory. Horses and the consequent flies have resulted. Would the Town Clerk please comment?—Yours, etc., LOCAL RESIDENT. November 16, 1967. [The Town Clerk of Christchurch (Mr M. B. Hayes) replies: “It is. assumed that the correspondent is referring to the western end of the old Opawa dump. (1) This end of the dump is not included in the area allocated for a park. (2) The fence was erected some three or four years

ago by council staff along the continuation of the dump boundary across unformed road to the river to stop unauthorised dumping of rubbish. (3) Areas have been let for grazing horses on a month-to-month basis, subject to several conditions, including compliance with health requirements. These leases will cease when the proposed development takes place. (4) The “private entrance” re ferred to is indeed a private entrance, as at no part does it encroach on council land.”]
