Children’s Stock Show

A record number of 51 calves from five breeds, Including Friesian, Jersey, Ayrshire, Shorthorn, and crossbreds, was paraded on Wednesday at the annual Canterbury championships of the Boys’ and Giris’ Agriculture Clubs, held by the Canterbury Education Board at the Addington Show Grounds.

This was 14 more than last year’s previous record of 37. This year, which was only the second year in which lambs have been entered in the championships, 32 lambs competed for the W. L. Dawber Challenge Trophy, compared with 40 last year. The calf judges, Messrs R. G. Mclntosh, F. W. Fiecken and A. E. Williams, agreed that the standard of the calves in all sections of

judging had been particularly high. Mr Williams said the the over-all standard had been the highest' for many years. Particular attention had been given to the care of the animals. Their handling and leading had also been very good. Mr G. L. Nicoll, one of the lamb judges, said that the standard of the lambs had also been very high and they had been better turned out than last year. A noticeable improvement had been the handling of lambs in the ring, and competitors had obviously devoted considerable time to this section, he said.

The other lamb judges were Messrs H. I. Robinson and M. S. Henry.

Both sections were judged on record books, care and attention, and leading and handling. In the calf section the animals were also judged on dairy type.

Mr J. P. Fahey, district adviser in science to the Canterbury Education Board, said that from last year the award procedure had been revised so that the work which the competitor fiut into hie calf or lamb and nto completing project books took precedence over the type of animal presented.

“This does not mean that the dub is placing less emphasis on the rearing of good animals, but it is considered that in a children’s competition the most important consideration should be the work which the child does in order to prepare his subject for the judges.” The Tai Tapu Central Dairy Company’s challenge cup, the top award in the calf section, was won by Ross Legg, aged 11, of Southbridge School, with his Border Dorset lamb, Jody. The top award in the lamb section, the W. L. Dawber Challenge Trophy, was presented to Paul Tobeck, aged 12, of Greenpark School, for his Ayrshire calf, Phillipa. The photograph shows Paul Tobeck and Ross Legg with their winning entries. Prizes in both sections were presented by Mr S. C. Millar, a member of the Can-

terbury Education Board, and the Tad Tapu Central Dairy Company’s Challenge Cup was presented by Mr H. J. Hurford, a director of the company.
