Gifts Sought For Prisoners’ Wives
Christmas is often a worrying time for women whose husbands are serving prison sentences. Their income seldom stretches to extras for the Christmas dinner, and few are able to make their children’s requests to Santa Claus come true, says the Prisoners’ Aid and Rehabilitation Society.
The society is appealing to the public for help in its efforts to help these families, and those men in prison who do not receive gifts from their families or friends.
The society has about 50 families on its list, and about 100 inmates. It also hopes to raise enough money to enable the prison authorities to provide extra rations on Christmas Day.
“Any gifts of cash, sweets, or cigarettes would be much appreciated. We can make up the latter into Christmas parcels. The money would be given to the four prisons in Christchurch for Christmas dinners, and issued to wives as grocery orders," said Mrs M. S. Finch, the honorary secretary.
Gifts or donations may be left at the society’s office at 215 Simeon Street, Addington. If donors are unable to call at the office they may ring 384-914 and their gift will be collected.
