New Headmaster Of Wellington H.S.
Mr C. R. Bradwell, who has been appointed principal of the Wellington High School, has been notable in both teaching and athletics before taking his present appointment as deputy principal of the Riccarton High School.
He was a former New Zealand 220 yards hurdles champion and New Zealand record holder in 1938. His Canterbury record for 120 yards hurdles stood unbroken for more than 25 years. In 1945 and 1946 he was captain of the Canterbury athletics team. After war service with the 2nd N.Z.E.F., Mr Bradwell won an American Field Service scholarship and graduated bachelor of arts with honours at Dickinson College, Pennsylvania. On return to New Zealand he took a commerce degree at the University of Canterbury and an honours degree in history. His teaching service included three years as first assistant at the Government African School at Kisii in Kenya, where he also had a period as acting principal. Afterwards he was on the staff of the Waitaki Boys’ High School.
Mr Bradwell then joined the foundation staff of the Riccarton High School in 1958. He was head of the social studies department, deputy principal, and acting principal there. Mr Bradwell has had a long association with the musical and youth work of the Salvation Army. A history of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, prepared for his M.A. thesis, was later published. Mr Bradwell will take up
his new appointment at the beginning of next year. The Wellington High School was formed from the secondary department of the Wellington Technical College when its other divisions became the Centra! Polytechnic. The high school now has a roll of about 800.
