Sobering Up
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 4. A London scientist has found a cocktail that makes drunks sober faster than exercise, raw eggs or black coffee. The drink consists of pure lemon juice laced with fructose (fruit sugar). Dr Gaston Pawan, a research. biochemist, tried various traditional sobering-up methods on 12 men who had each drunk the equivalent of five whiskies on an empty stomach. Some men ran three miles, others swam 1000 yards. Black coffee was administered. So were raw eggs in Worcester sauce. But the men who drank the special cocktail were the first to sober up. Dr Pawan said: “The fruc-tose-and-lemon method was definitely the best, significantly speeding up the rate of decline of blood alcohol.”
