Water Polo Defeat

“Th* Press’’ Special Service . WELLINGTON. In an exciting representative water polo match, Wellington defeated a determined Canterbury side 6-4 on Saturday. The Wellington players were however, forged to call on all their reserves of experience because even in the small and somewhat unsuitable Thorndon Pool, Canterbury adopted tactics which often left large holes in the opposition's defence. The teams were:— Canterbury.— i: L. Gunthorp (captain), I. S. Farquhar, T ,M. McGurr, B. M. Mustchin, P. K. Hatchwell, W. R. Williamson, M. J. M. Hay, M. C. Scott. Wellington.—G. Marthlew (captain), D, Farkes, K. Mark, W. Howes, M. Harvey, B. Crowder, R. Freear. W. Dunn, K. Thornton, W. Martlew . EARLY LEAD Wellington shot into an early lead when, winning the swimpup, Mark was put away to score. Canterbury equalised soon afterwards when Mustchin gained a clear break, received the ball and slammed it past the goalkeeper from an acute angle. During the second and third quarters penalty points were numerous and from .the resulting direct shots at goal Gunthorp scored twice for Canterbury and Harvey'twice for Wellington. Scott, one of Canterbury’s strongest men in defence, was also prominent in several attacks, once scoring an excellent goal ohly to have It disallowed because of an Infringement elsewhere in the pool. Hatchwell and Williamson also played well, and Williamson was unlucky not to score in the final quarter when, given a clear shot at goal, saw the Wellington goalkeeper, Freear, deflect the ball high in the air. Canterbury's fourth goal was from a lob-shot by Gunthorp, and Harvey, Dunn and Thornton netted Wellington's other goals. The two teams meet again in the second leg for the Norden Trophy at Christchurch in February.
