‘Compass’ Programme On Morals Attacked

. ,(h’eu> Zealand. A»«l)Ct.aHon> A , ? :WANGAKfci," December 3. The New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation’s handling of a “Compass” programme dealing -with moral standards last Thursday was last night described as “irresponsible” by the chairman of the Wanganui district committee of thS National Council of Churches

Mr King said he planned to “pursue the matter through the appropriate Church channels" so that a protest could be made to the corporation. “By having two intellectuals opposing a minister, the programme was 1 heavily loaded against ‘ Christian morals,” he said. “Even the chairman did not help matters because he sat on the fence. “When you have a loaded panel like this, television becomes a propaganda machine. “The corporation should adopt a responsible attitude in programmes of this nature and should ensure that established moral standards are adequately defended'.” ■ -I

Mr King said many parents had protested to him about the programme and had asked what action the Churches w’fe taking. A particularly harmful aspect of the programme was that many young, impressionable people were able to view it, he added.
