Retail Turnover Down $10m
"The Preu" Special service WELLINGTON, December 3. Retail trade turnover in the September quarter dropped nearly slom from the same quarter last year to $369.6m.
While food stores in general continued to expand their trade, every other group of stores covered in the survey recorded decreased sales compared with last year. The over-all decrease was 2.5 per cent. Only butchers and poultry sellers in the food group showed a drop, with sales falling 3.9 per cent Grocers’ turn-over increased 6.5 per cert and remaining food and drink stores 6 per cent
The largest fall of 17.8 per cent was recorded by the household ippliances, electri-
city and radio and television group, followed by a 15 per cent drop by furniture and furnishing stores. Sales of all other groups of stores surveyed decreased by varying percentages ranging from 0.8 per cent to 7.5 per cent With adjustments for seasonal fluctuations and price and population changes, turnover per head dropped from $155.3 in the June quarter to $112.2 in the September quarter, a decrease of 2.7 per cent.
