British Car Parts Increased In Price
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, December 1.
The factory prices of many British car parts have been raised by at least 7f per cent, roughly doubling the increase New Zealand motorists would have to pay because of devaluation alone.
The managing director of Motor Specialties, Ltd (Mr J. F. Johnston) said today that cables from suppliers indicated that the rise was fairly general. “Many of the parts have a high imported content,” he said.
Mr K. E. F. Grenney, managing director of another
major car parts importing firm, Motor Traders, Ltd, said he expected an increase averaging at least 8 or 9 per cent for all car parts available in New Zealand. These included those from Britain, from countries like Australia and japan which had not devalued, and from which parts would be about 22 to 25 per cent dearer, and from New Zealand itself, where manufacturers were still considering their prices. Already some spare parts were being sold here at the
new post-devaluation rates. Firms which paid on credit would have to increase their prices immediately, even though the part concerned might have been landed in New Zealand before devaluation, said Mr Grenney.
