County May Help On “Mona Vale”
If the Halswell County Council wished to make a contribution towards the cost of buying “Mona- Vale,” Paparua, in spite of the pending amalgamation of the two counties, would not oppose it, said the chairman of the Paparua County Council (Mr D. H. Warren) at a joint meeting of the two councils last evening. Cr P. Wynn-Williams (Halswell) raised the question. He said that Halswell had agreed to contribute if all other coun-
y cils did. As the other couni- cils did not agree, Halswell’s f offer had lapsed. , “I am more than ever con- - vinced that we should help, i, and I dread to see this place s lost to the people of Christi church,” he said. If Halswell wanted to make f a contribution, it would be :. spending its own money, said i- Mr Warren, but a similar sugs gestion would not have any 1 luck with Paparua. r “If we saw fit to make a - contribution, would the combined county honour it?” asked Cr Wynn-Williams. “That puts me on the spot,” ■ said Mr Warren. Halswell, as a county town under the merger, could contribute its own funds, said Cr E. C. Britnell (Paparua). Paparua should honour any f obligation of Halswell’s prior Ito amalgamation, even if 1 Paparua was dead against it, , said Cr H. W. Bennett (Papa- ' rua). 1 Cr Wynn-Williams said that e Halswell would not want to do anything if Paparua would n not be happy. The amount in- :• volved was a bagatelle. t “We were unanimous b against contributing, and I !-• think that stands,” said Mr :■ Warren. “I don’t think we 1 will have a change of heart, but I don't think we would t interfere with Halswell.’ J Halswell’s chairman (Mr J. 1 Y. Pethig)! said his council e would be glad to bear Papas rua’s attitude in mind if the e “Mona Vale” contribution came up.
