FITNESS CHECKS

1388 Vehicles Examined

The Transport Department had examined 1388 vehicles during the fitness check in the last four weeks, the district officer (Mr D. L. Hogan) said yesterday. Of these, 293 were found to have some fault which would prevent the vehicles from passing warrant of fitness tests.

Mr Hogan said 968 of the vehicles were not fitted with seat belts. Of the 420 that were. 173 drivers were not using them at the time of inspection. <

In some cases the inspecting officers had issued tickets for offences, while in others drivers were instructed to have faults rectified.

Mr Hogan said the survey would continue next month.
