Rotary Appeal To Aid Welfare Work
Christchurch welfare organ-i isations will benefit from the annual street appeal of the city’s Rotary clubs, which will be held tomorrow for the 45th year. “The annual Rotary appeal originated in the depression years, and has been continued because there has been a very real need for it,” said the
Christchurch Club’s president (Mr L. S. Johns) yesterday. He emphasised that there were no overheads, secretarial or other expenses to be deducted from contributions.
Rotary was eager to continue to help deserving causes, the aged, the needy and the handicapped. Among the good works to be helped by the appeal are four special chairs to help teach spastic children at Templeton Hospital to walk. The club proposes to pay the full fees for one boy at the Outward Bound School. Boys will be sponsored at the Y.M.C.A. camp at Wainui. furniture will be bought for the Cholmondeley Home, the Rev. D. D. Thorpe will be helped with his work among the needy and equipment will be bought for the Girls’ Nautical Training Corps. Help for Nurse Maude homes, the Calvary psychiatric day clinic and youth hostels, magazines for Sunnyside Hospital and Christmas benefits for St Martin’s House of Help, the Mayor’s social services, Salvation Army and other organisations are also listed.
The Lyttelton appeal will be made on Wednesday.
