CUTS BY U.K.
Troops Not Affected (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 2L The Secretary of Defence, Mr Denis Healey, last night ruled out any speed-up of planned British troop withdrawals from the Far East as part of the post-devaluation drive for defence economies. He said in a special message to home and overseas forces that the plans to cut defence spending next year by £loom would not alter the main outlines of defence policy and force structure announced last July. “There will, therefore, be no major changes in the rate of run-down of military personnel already announced or in the deployment of our forces overseas,” Mr Healey added. Earlier Government sources had also said Britain would not cut its £loo9m order for United States military aircraft. Officials said that any cuts in these contracts could involve Britain in heavy cancellation costs which would minimise any savings. In any case, the Phantoms and Hercules planes were essential as replacements for obsolete R.A.F. and Navy aircraft.
