Future of Wheat

In the course of a study of the effect of fluctuating wool prices on the grower, the Wool Marketing Study Group of the Wool Board and Wool Commission said that the increase in the wheat acreage must in part be attributed to its guaranteed price and high profitability. It was estimated that this year New Zealand would produce its entire wheat requirements, and this might mean that either wheat may be grown on a quota basis in the future or that the guaranteed price may be reduced next year. “Hence wheat production in the future may not compete with wool production over a wide range,” says the study group.
