Clergyman’s Stand

CN.ZPA.-Reuter) CAPE TOWN. A South African Anglican clergyman refuses to marry couples who do not intend to have children. Canon David Jenkins, rector of All Saints Church, Somerset West, Cape Province, said that such people “are not fulfilling the Christian purpose of marriage.” The canon, who was speaking at a lunch-hour discussion for people thinking of marrying, held in the crypt of St George’s Cathedral was asked if thought that children were essential to marriage. He replied that one of the three purposes of marriage, as stated in the marriage service, was for “the increase of mankind.”
