At 88 years of age R. Haworth did what many younger persons would have like to have done but did not last Sunday morning. He got out of bed and listened to the Rugby test against Wales. This veteran Canterbury club bowler is pictured above (seated) in 1936 with J. W. Turpin when they won the national pairs championship at Christchurch.
Haworth still plays bowls for Canterbury about twice a week and is a life member of the club. Apart from winning the national rinks title and the national pairs title in 1936 and the rinks title again in 1937, he has won six club singles championships, five fours championships and four pairs championships. His first singles title for the club was _ way back in 1917 and his subsequent successful years were 1920, 1925, 1932, 1935 and 1943. His successes in the club fours were in 1930, 1934, 1936, 1937 and 1943. In the pairs he won in 1924, 1929, 1944 and in 1949. An amazing feature about Ms career is that since moving from Kaiapoi in 1910, Haworth has attended every opening day of the Canterbury dub. Edgeware Pain The two dub championship pairs played at Edgeware
last week both were played to extra ends. W. J. Rudduck and C. T. Till (skip) lost by two shots after being six up on the nineteenth against A. Hay and T. O. CMnnery (skip).
Chlnnery drew level by getting a four at the twentieth end and a two at the twenty-first before getting the two winning shots. L. Boot and D. E. Wood (skip) were all square with M. Quickenden and W. Winterbourn at the twentyfirst end, but won the extra end by one shot. St Albans A very popular event at St Albans is the Edmonds Triples Competition held on Monday evenings. Points are given for attendance as well as wins. Two years ago the competition was dying out but it was revived because of the efforts at the match committee. A highlight of last week’s dub championship games was the singles match between W. Cole and T. J. Edmonds. Up to the twelth head, Edmonds was out-drawing his opponent to lead 15-6. Then Cole improved his game to draw even by the nineteenth, and at the end he used a full-blooded dean drive to take the match. Fendalton Park
There were two interesting games in the Fendalton championship pairs recently. Warren and Johnson were beaten by a point by Spiers and Blakeway when Blakeway drew second shot to win the game. '
Lee and Jones went away to a good lead against Collett and Ridley, but it was whittled down as the game went on. On the last end, Ridley took out Jones’s shot bowl to make it a tie.
On the the extra end, Collett threw the kitty and with Ms first bowl drew a toucher which proved to be enough for victory. Upset There was a big upset in the Canterbury championship rinks on Sunday, when T.
Kearney's rink beat H. Fletcher’s rink. Beckenham Beckenham has made notable improvements to its No. 1 and 2 greens. The club has re-sown No. 1 green in weed which has successfully taken. No. 2 green has been considerably improved by a new block wall and decorated with garden shrubs. Competition games have begun and it is apparent that younger members will be a force to be reckoned with by the club's name players. The duib is exceptionally strong in afternoon players and competitions for the various trophies are well under way.
